Much like BMW's gas-powered cars, the new BMW EV lineup shares powertrain technology across different model lines. Therefore, the 2023 BMW iX and the 2024 BMW i5 offer similar performance figures, including the 516-horsepower xDrive50. And at the top of the range, both the BMW i5 and iX deliver 610 horsepower from the M60 high-performance electric powertrain.
However, the BMW i5 does differentiate from the iX at the bottom end of the lineup. The eDrive40 is a single-motor, rear-wheel drive variant. With a range up to 295 miles and 335 horsepower, it is both more affordable and lightweight than the xDrive40 option.

Of course, the biggest difference between the 2023 BMW iX and 2024 BMW i5 is their builds. While the iX is a midsize luxury SUV, the BMW i5 is a 5 Series sedan with an all-electric powertrain. As a full size luxury sedan, it packs plenty of comfort like the iX. However, it's low-slung nature means sharp handling and improved efficiency over its SUV sibling.
