The EV market is ever more crowded these days, with high-class luxury SUVs available from the usual suspects, plus a few new players in Tesla and Rivian. But how does the BMW iX compare to models from Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and these newcomers? With excellent ‘as tested’ range numbers and a high rate of customer satisfaction, the BMW iX stands tall in a packed EV field.
BMW iX Range: EPA vs Real-World Numbers
If you’re looking strictly at the EPA numbers, the BMW iX is in the middle of the pack with 307 miles of estimated range. That puts it behind the 348-mile Tesla and 316-mile Rivian R1S 4 Motor, but ahead of the Mercedes EQE’s 253 miles of range and the Audi Q8 e-tron’s 285 miles from full charge. However, publications including Consumer Reports, Edmunds, and MotorTrend have done their own real-world testing and found that the BMW iX far outperforms its EPA estimate.
Consumer Reports found that the iX is good for 370 miles of highway range, while an Edmunds mixed-road test found 345 miles of total range. Both of those figures exceed the Consumer Reports highway range for the Tesla Model X, which ran out of juice at just 313 miles. Meanwhile, the Mercedes EQE managed just 270 miles of range, and the four-motor Rivian R1S came the closest at 330 miles of real-world range.
Consumer Satisfaction Puts the BMW iX on Top
Overall, Consumer Reports ranked all of the EVs it tested according to an overall Customer Satisfaction score that accounts for range, service center experience, reliability, cabin amenities, and more. With a score of 84, the BMW iX takes the top spot for all EVs. Among large SUVs, the Audi Q8 e-tron is next, sitting in 10th place with a score of 70. And the Tesla Model X managed just 53 points, putting it in 29th, just ahead of the Rivian R1S.
