Plug-in Hybrid vehicles are the next step toward our electricity driven automotive future, and the 2021 BMW X3 PHEV shows off just how functional these systems can be. As one of several new BMW models for sale near Birmingham that offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain option, the BMW X3 PHEV gives you an even greater sense of versatility for your travels.

The Combustion Engine

The main source of power in the 2021 BMW X3 PHEV is still a combustion engine – in this case a 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower turbocharged four-cylinder engine that, on its own, generates 288 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The torque peaks at just 1,450 rpm, giving you the peak level of acceleration in a rev range where you can use it during normal driving when you need to pull away from a traffic light or get up to speed on a ramp. But when you combine this engine with the electric motor, the results become even more impressive.

The Electric Motor

While the electric motor component of the BMW X3 PHEV delivers just 107 horsepower and 77 pound-feet of torque, it does help boost power output slightly. While the overall horsepower remains the same, torque is improved to 310 pound-feet, giving you a massive push of power to help you get up to speed. And because electric motors can deliver peak torque at any speed, you’ll feel the instant pull whenever you decide to put your foot down.

How they Work Together

Independent drive shafts allow the combustion engine and electric motor to operate either together or independently. This is what allows you to run for 17 miles on electric power alone, something you can take advantage of on shorter commutes or quick rides around town. That said, you’ll most likely be using both motors together, where the electric motor supplements the combustion engine to improve fuel economy and throttle response.
