Today, BMW of North America announced via a press release that it has won the bid to supply electric vehicles to the Los Angeles Police Department. BMW will provide 100 fully-electric BMW i3s for use in the LAPD's transportation fleet. Used for administration tasks, the new fleet of vehicles will save the city money fuel and maintenance costs.
After a field trial of several EV models, the i3 was chosen for its best-in-class EPA efficiency ratings, state-of-the-art ConnectedDrive services, and reliability. BMW's use of lightweight Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), combined with its small form factor, give the i3 excellent agility, which is ideal for crowded city streets. BMW also offers extensive knowledge of charging infrastructure. According to the press release, Greenlots, a global provider of open standards-based distributed energy resource solutions, will supply 100 Level 2 chargers and four DC fast chargers to LAPD.
“We should be thinking green in everything we do — and these new EVs show how local government can lead,” said Mayor Garcetti. “Our sustainability plan pushes L.A. to speed adoption of greener practices and technologies, which also save money and resources.”
