The view was of China's and the world's most populous city on April 19 as BMW announced at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show the first-ever BMW M4 CS, arriving at U.S. dealerships in 2018.
The powerhouse surely turned heads with its front end, bedecked by twin LED headlights to top a front apron bespeaking aerodynamics with large, three-section air intakes, as well as with a model-specific carbon-fiber front splitter, BMW M4 GTS-style rear diffuser and exposed carbon-fiber Gurney trunk spoiler lip. And the Special-Edition M4 CS did play to the muscle car segment with a long CFRP hood and cavernous wheel arches. But it looks to be its supercar performance specs that speed the vehicle out – way out – beyond the sports competition.
The BMW M4 CS experience begins with a high-output TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter engine, and it's not just 454 horsepower shelling out 442 pound-feet of crushing torque that kicks the car into gear out the gate. Its Nurburgring Nordschleife lap time weighs in at a metaphorical tire-shredding 7 minutes and 38 seconds – a top-tier showing for a car with a top speed of 174 mph capable of peeling out at a preliminary zero to 60 mph in as little as 3.8 seconds.
And you can count on BMW to have designed Special-Edition M4 CS for the handling requisite to not only driving thrills but reliable stability.
Thanks to a 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission, with a separate oil cooler to keep it operating at peak capability, you can change gears in a fraction of a second without power interruption, whether you're going hands-on manual or cruising automatic, and whether you're modifying via steering wheel-mounted shift paddles or the center gearshift lever. M4 CS is built with a long seventh gear, too, so you can enjoy the seamless feel of low revs while minimizing fuel consumption.
BMW M specially tuned Dynamic Stability Control activates discretionarily and when needed to help keep all four M4 CS wheels firmly planted during maneuvers, and the car's Adaptive M Suspension shows an eye to BMW having designed it for road and track alike. M Servotronic steering increases dynamic range, and you can even set the vehicle's Active M Differential to suit drive-time style and conditions. Taking your everyday drive through the city? Activate Comfort mode. Sport mode lets you tackle curvaceous terrain with precision. And when it's time to hit the track, Sport+ mode optimizes M4 CS systems for speedster dynamics. And if you'd prefer a balance, M Dynamic Mode combines electronic assistance, keeping the DSC ready during controlled drifts.
And the special edition isn't without its interior creature comforts and amenities for finishing ride touches. Recline in the lap of luxury afforded by lightweight M sports seats with leather and Alcantara trims and enjoy a driver-centric interior that sets vehicle controls within easy reach. Standard features include Standard features on board include automatic climate control for a customizable cabin, navigation to take you from point A to point Anywhere, and a BMW HiFi audio system optimized to BMW M4 CS interior acoustics for the drive-time entertainment to get you there.
