Types of Engine Gaskets

With so many different parts in your car’s engine, it is easy to overlook the importance of gaskets. Below is an explanation of the different gaskets and what they do:

  • Cylinder Head Gaskets - Often referred to as a head gasket, this part is responsible for preventing combustion gases from entering the cooling system. The head gasket is located between the cylinder head and the engine block.
  • Intake Gaskets - Intake gaskets prevent air from escaping and regulate the temperature inside the chamber; this enables the proper mixture of fuel and oxygen that is necessary for efficient engine performance.
  • Manifold Gaskets - Manifold gaskets are located between the cylinder head and exhaust manifold. If they are not properly maintained, they will fail, leading to poor engine performance.
